In the spirit of pushing the boundaries of creativity and design, we are proud of our latest work of functional art. This "Living River" dining table is comprised of two beautiful black walnut slabs that were sourced locally from Jewell Hardwoods in Clackamas, OR. They are bookmatched slabs with the live edge arranged on the interior (contrary to most "live edge" furniture) and rotated 180° relative to each other. The center is a piece of ¼" plate steel that was fabricated by ISCO here in Bend, OR to match the black walnut's grain pattern and then positioned in the void between the two halves for a flush fit. The process that we used in the construction allowed us to assemble the table with very tight tolerances for a virtually seamless boundary between the wood and the steel. The steel was lightly ground in a fashion that allows for light to catch the etched lines to give the illusion of river current and has a transparent powder-coated finish. The wood is protected with multiple coats of hand-rubbed polyurethane for a deep luster and the joint where the steel and wood meet is sealed to prevent liquids from running between the two materials. It is all supported on tubular steel legs with a center spine for a solid support structure that is sleek and simple so as to not distract from the table top.
This was a very fun and challenging build for us. It caused us to push our skills and come up with new techniques in order to maintain the level of accuracy for the fitment of the two different materials, and we feel the result speaks for itself.
Our live edge series' primary guide and focus is the concerted design of the piece and the live edge portion is solely a contributing component.
We search for slabs that correlate to our concept rather than letting the live edge dictate our intentions for a piece. This principle is evident in the stance that we incorporate into a piece, the style and construction of our bases, and the attention that we give to our welds and hardware. All of these factors contribute to the attitude and are present in every piece we build.
This piece marks the start of our new "Live Edge" collection section of our website!

Here at TerraSteel, we like to push the boundaries of style and imagination and experiment with different techniques and methods to create leading edge designs. One of our most recent techniques involves a little bit of power, chemistry and some luck to leave a unique pattern into our wood pieces. What makes this method interesting and exciting for us is that it allows the wood to dictate the design. Rather than using a form or a stamp to burn these patterns into the wood that creates mass-produced designs that are all the same, the different species, densities, and grain patterns determine the details making every piece of wood unique and one-of-a-kind.
We have incorporated this new style into our newest "Current ARTifacts" series. We have a variety of finished wall art pieces on our website for sale, but we can also make custom pieces to fit a specific space in your home or office. Beyond wall art, we are starting to incorporate these new designs into some of our furniture. Because the designs are essentially "etched" into the wood, once we seal and finish them, the texture is still present but is protected.
Below are some of examples of the different species and the various patterns that have emerged...
(Wood species in order from top to bottom: Bubinga, Sapele, Western Maple)

Our most recent member of the TerraSteel family has great curves and long slender legs. This beauty sports a 36" see-though top with a 32" hip on top of 30" legs... Just so we are clear, we are talking about a table.
All the curves were bent using embossed steel that was stamped by Downtown Ornamental Iron for a great textured effect and features two celtic knots at the center. The upper and lower knots are slightly different in size to maintain proportion with the slight taper on the legs. The 3/8" glass top from Alpine Glass Company gives a unobstructed view of the base and if you look closely, the two knots are going in opposing directions. It has been powder-coated in Sherwin-Williams "Soft Rubbed Bronze" courtesy of our friends at Commercial Powder Coating, Inc. located right up the road from our shop.
This was an exciting piece to make and it has been a while since we have incorporated this kind of element into our work. We hope that you enjoy it as much as we do!

Last week we got our latest creation back from powder-coating in time for final assembly and delivery. It is a seven foot tall steel baker's rack finished in Cardinal's "Rust" color powder-coating courtesy of Commercial Powder Coating, Inc. which blended handsomely with shelves made from one of our favorite wood species, Bubinga. It also features a cabinet made from stained maple plywood with three floating drawers with bumper guides and a steel slide stop in the rear. The drawers are faced in a light color Bubinga and is trimmed around the edges with a darker Bubinga for contrast. *Notice how the grain pattern flows across all three drawers.
This baker's rack also accommodates a custom side loading wine glass rack as well as lower chambers with enough space to store 26 bottles of wine (the tubes from the last post). Bottles can be stored in the 4" diameter tubes or in the negative space between them.
Below are some pictures of this fine specimen in its newly acquainted home with some other TerraSteel family members!
Here are some of its siblings to that welcomed it home... (From top to bottom: Zebrawood Contemporary Shelved Media Console, Zebrawood Tiered Shelved Media Console, 6 Quarter Zebrawood Coffee Table w/ Organic Steel Radius.)

Below are some assembly images of a piece that we are currently constructing for one of our clients. It features a heavy duty 1" x 2" square tube frame with rows of 4" diameter steel tubes that are just over 17" long and backed with expanded steel. It has been welded and braced with 3" x 1/4" steel flat bar. It is big, heavy and ready to pop into action.
Any ideas on what it may be? Submit your comments and stay tuned to find out...

We LOVE installation days at TerraSteel Furniture Design. Because each custom furniture piece ordered through us receives free delivery and installation in Bend, Oregon. We take pride in ensuring every piece is constructed perfectly and fits exactly as it's supposed to.
Today, TerraSteel Furniture Design delighted another Bend, Oregon client. Their house was buzzing with energy from the contractor, plumber, and electrician as well as ourselves. This family was redesigning pieces of their luxury home, and it was all culminating together.
And a custom modern dining table and wrap-around bench (with hidden storage) by TerraSteel was the finishing touch to their kitchen remodel.
Our client clapped her hands delightedly and couldn't stop smiling the entire time we were there putting the custom furniture pieces in place.
It's a great feeling when not only are the clients overjoyed, but the others at the house couldn't stop oohing and aahing, as well.
